In a bit of shocking and unexpected news today, Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil announced he will be stepping down from his position as Premier and leaving public office.

After 17 years in public office, seven as Premier, McNeil will step down and a leadership contest will choose a new leader. He will stay on as Premier until that process in complete.

McNeil made the announcement during a post-cabinet news conference on Thursday. More to come.
