April 21 COVID-19 Update

Nova Scotia Update:
1 new death
0 new hospitalizations
0 new ICU cases
38 more people recovered (286 total)

Unfortunately the new death is again at Northwood, making 6/10 NS deaths are from that facility and 9/10 are from long term care in general (10 different facilities). The 1 person who died that was not related to long term care was a woman in her 90's who died April 8 in Cape Breton. As it stands, 90% of deaths and 26% of all cases are from long term care facilities. Whilst this is terrible and we can only hope the situation in these facilities improves asap, it is also clear that outside of these facilities, the situation in NS is very strong and we have had just 1 death, and no one under 90. There is absolutely no evidence or reason to suggest the people of NS are not doing what has been asked of them. A lack of staying home has NOT caused this issue at long term care. Once one case got in, the spread was inevitable. We certainly hope it levels off very soon

  • NS has 10 deaths, making the death rate 10/1M population
  • Canada's rate sitting at 45/1M
  • Global rate is 22/1M
  • US rate is 130/1M
  • Austria rate is 53/1M
  • Spain is 444/1M

Notable points for today:

  • Spain's increase back down to under 2%, things are really slowing down there.
  • Austria ticked up slightly but are still under 4% and overall on the right track. With their small population, a couple of deaths makes a big difference to their numbers
  • The rate of death in Canada at it's lowest level AGAIN since March 30, now under 7%
  • The US matched it's fantastic day yesterday with a rate of increase again well under 5%
  • These trends continue to allow us to be cautiously optimistic that the downturn will continue to show we are now beyond the peak
